Cardboard Challenge at JES
Social Studies
Our next Social Studies unit is Small World. We are traveling around the world as we learn about different cultures and learning the 7 continents and major oceans.
The essential questions for this unit are:- How is culture different and the same around the world?
- Why is understanding different cultures important?
- How does your life/culture compare/contrast with other cultures?
- Geography/Map Skills - What are the major land and water features on the globe?
- How do we use digital tools to effectively communicate and share ideas or information with others?
We started the unit by making suitcases.
We then boarded Underhill ID Airlines for our trip to Australia. We got our passports stamped and flew, via Google Maps, to Australia. On board we watched the in-flight movie, Families of Australia, which follows the lives of two children who live in different parts of Australia.
We then listed similarities and differences between children who live in Australia and us.
We compared school, family life, sports, everyday routines, food, and celebrations.
In Australia, we made didgeridoos for a souvenir.
We also had a special guest come in to teach us about Greece's culture!
Thanks to Angelike Contois for teaching us all about Greece!
Reading
Second graders have been working on making their reading more fluent.
We have also been identifying and understanding Literary Language and how it keeps readers interested in the books they are reading.
I read a page of Owl Moon.
Students closed their eyes and listened to the author's description
and then drew what they saw in their minds
In Writing, students are learning how to write persuasive letters!
Ask your child what Double Stuffed OREOS have to do with persuasive letters.
We will be finishing up this unit next week. Be on the lookout for letters that your child may have written to you!
