Crafternoons

On Monday afternoons we take a little time to make crafts to take home or for our classroom.
This fall we have made apple trees, apple prints, and apple sauce!

This week we made Turkeys!
Children traced their hands for the feathers and then wrote what they are thankful for.
Students then made their own small turkey to take home!

Matter Observations

Students explored the properties of a liquid and a solid and recorded their observations.

Fall Hike

Chapin Orchards Field Trip

We had a beautiful day for our trip to Chapin Orchards!  Children learned how cider was made, learned about the importance of bees for apples, and picked and ate delicious Liberty apples.
Thanks to the UID PTO for helping to fund our field trip!

Matter
Students have begun learning about Matter.  This week we looked at some of the properties of solids.  Students worked with a partner to sort solids by color.  They then sorted their solids any other way they wanted and other groups had to make observations to determine how they had been sorted!  We will continue to explore other properties of solids next week.

Welcome Back!

We’ve had a great start to the school year!  This week we have been getting to know new friends and our classroom.  We read several books about the transition from home to school including The Kissing Hand and Wemberly Worried.  We also read Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen as we talked about what listening looks and sounds like and why it’s important to listen.  We started talking about classroom and school rules.  We have narrowed down all the rules to four categories:
·         Rules so we can all learn
·         Rules to keep us safe
·         Rules to keep our materials and school nice
·         Rules to take care of ourselves and other’s feelings

Just a Reminder…

There is no School, Monday September 2nd.

A New Morning Routine!

Beginning Tuesday, students that arrive between 7:25 and 7:45 will be come into the building, place their backpacks in the Multi-Purpose room and then go directly to the playground for a supervised recess.  Teachers will line students up at 7:45 to go in to their classrooms.  Children should come to school properly dressed to go directly outside, even in the winter.  In the event of extreme cold or rain, students will go to the Multi-purpose room for books, coloring or conversing.

Math

We spent the first few days exploring materials and discussing how they help us learn math. We also brainstormed ways to share materials and take care of them.  Next week we will start meeting in math groups. Students will work with all first and second grade teachers throughout the year. Teachers will be planning activities to meet the needs of different learner’s in the classroom.  Our school uses the Investigations II math program.

Have a Great Weekend!

Welcome to Ms Coulombe's Classroom Blog!

Our first day of school is Wednesday, August 28th.  I am looking forward to seeing my second graders again and meeting my new first graders!

I have been very busy the past few weeks setting up the classroom.  If you are a returning second grader, there have been some changes in the classroom, including the color of the walls!  What color do you think the classroom has been painted?

Many of you may be wondering what you need for  school.  I will provide all pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, and everything else you may need at school.  You will need to bring a backpack, a snack and your lunch.

Please be sure to subscribe to my blog for announcements, classroom updates and newsletters.
