October and November

Small Moment Book Celebration
What an amazing turnout for our second grade authors!

Proud authors and proud parents!

It all started with an idea!

We drew sketches to show the beginning middle and end.
We then put them in order.
We began our first draft!

We added, and added, and added details such as what we were thinking, what people were saying, motion and movement words, descriptive words, how we felt, beginnings to hook our reader, endings that wrapped up our stories and a catchy title!

We read and shared our stories with our
peers to get even more ideas!

A Vermont Author
On Friday Vermont author Linda Cruise came to visit Underhill ID first and second graders. She shared her book Around the World from A to Z.  She shared how she got her ideas and the process she went through to get her book published.

Math
Geometry Unit

Matching geoblocks to geoblock faces

Creating pattern block designs

Finding out which chocolate bar is the biggest by finding how many square inch tiles is has.
We learned that biggest doesn't mean tallest or widest.
Recording our math observations.

Social Studies
America's Earliest People

The Essential Questions for this unit are:

1.

Why do people move?

2.

How does life in the past compare to my life today?

Second graders have been learning about different regions of the United States and the Native Americans of that region and how Native Americans lived based on their geographical regions. We will spend the next weeks learning more about early settlers, why they came to America and what their life was like.  Students will compare and contrast their life to the life of a child long ago.

Super September Second Graders

Second Graders have been

Super busy this September!

Fall Hike!
We had a lovely day for our Fall Hike.  Thanks so much to the parents who were able to hike with us!

Setting Up for Second Grade Routines and Learning

Mr Wells came in and reviewed how to log in to our Chomebooks.  We practiced carrying them safely and putting them back where they belong.

Practicing carrying our Chromebooks with two hands.

Reviewing how to Log in
Using Our Chromebooks for Fasttmath
Second Graders have begun practicing their addition math facts using Fasttmath!  Once we have practiced a few times at school, I will send home information on how your child can log in at home and practice.

Building fact fluency with Fasttmath

Part of Math Menu is playing games.

Ask your child what math games should look and sound like in class.

Ask you child how to play Make Ten and Tens Go Fish
We are practicing identifying and counting coins up to 25 cents.
This is a great skill to practice at home!

Science

In Science we are doing a mini unit on making and recording observations with everyday objects.  We started with leaves and will be practicing soon with apples and other fall items.

Scientists make careful observations

Scientist record their observations to share with others.

Scientists use labels
Scientists pay careful attention to details
Scientists use their senses to describe things

Scientists use actual size
Spelling
We will be spending September reviewing the skills second graders learned in first grade Fundations.  We have reviewed sh, th, ch, short vowels,  ack, eck, ick, ock, uck.  We will continue reviewing -ng, -nk, blends, clusters, sentence structure,  and Trick Words.

Ask your child what the dots are for.

Reading Workshop
Second graders have been reviewing how to choose "Just Right" books.  We have also been practicing Silent Reading and Buddy Reading.  Our second graders have gotten to 21 minutes of Silent Reading! Second graders will continue on building stamina for reading silently.

Second graders also reviewed that readers have favorite parts and make connections (This reminds me of...)  Students marked their favorite part of a book with a sticky note and then shared their favorite part with their reading buddy.

Ask your child how they earned Popsicles and a Video!
