K-3 Reading Buddies!
Third graders were paired up with a kindergarten buddy from Mrs Curry's class.  On Thursday, the 3rd graders met their buddies.  The buddies worked together to make a book to get to know each other.  Buddies drew and wrote about their favorite color, food, pet and season.

We then met again on Friday for reading. Third grade buddies used what they learned about their buddy to choose books to read to them.  They we so thoughtful!
Kindergarten buddies read their books to us and then we read books to them.

Buddies!

This week in  3rd Grade
  • Spelling - this week we reviewed how short vowel words are often spelled with one vowel and long vowel words often have another vowel to help it make the long sound.  We looked at c-v-c (consonant-vowel-consonant)words like kit and how adding a magic e makes the vowel make a long sound (kite). We also talked about how there are always exceptions to the rules.
Next week: reviewing cvc and cvc-e long i spelling patterns and irregular high frequency spelling words
  • Math - 3rd graders are solving multiplication story problems using a variety of strategies such as:
    • skip counting
                 3x6=n                      6, 12, 18
    • repetitive addition:
                  3x6= n                   6+6+6=n
  • We have also begun looking at the relationship of counting by 5s and 10 and the 3's and 6s.
Next week we will begin MobyMax Fact Fluency at school to work on becoming fluent with addition and multiplication.

  • Writing- Our writing journals are decorated with pictures to inspire writing! This week we brainstormed "Things that I couldn't imagine life without" to inspire our writing.  We are setting up our journals and looked at what a 3rd grade journal looks like.  As a class we noticed what journals have and do not have and how they are different from what we've done for writing in kindergarten, first and second grade.
Ask your child what they remember about what journals look like!
Next week - We'll begin writing lots of stories that start with, The time...
