January News
A Few Notes:
- Thank you! Thanks to everyone for helping out for our Holiday party! The kids had a fabulous time!
- I will be out of the classroom Friday, January 16th for a Writing Workshop.
Spelling
All students are learning and reviewing the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh and ck. Ask your child which digraph always come at the end of a syllable (ck), which digraph comes at the beginning of a word (wh), which ones can be found anywhere in a word (sh, th, ch), and which digraph always comes after a short vowel(-ck -ack, -eck, -ick, -ock, -uck).
Homework
Just a reminder that all homework is due Fridays. For second graders, this includes completing Fasttmath lessons at home. Second graders should be doing FM at home at least 3 times a week.
The class is able to earn a star if everyone's completed homework is passed in on time.
Beginning with our next homework packet, I will be sending home a homework checklist and homework expectations for you and your child to read and fill in together.
Handwriting
We have finally finished up learning correct lower case letter formation! At this time of the year it is expected that all first and second graders are writing exclusively in lowercase letters with the exceptions of beginning of sentences, names, and the word I.
When your child is doing spelling homework, he or she should be forming letters correctly and using lower cases letters. Please have your child practice this at home and have them fix their letters if need be.
Math
First graders are finishing up Unit 2. In this unit, students practiced adding and subtracting quantities, showing their math thinking and using more sophisticated strategies, such as counting on and back, to solve problems. They also practiced writing numbers up to 125 and counting quantities up to 50 and showing how they know they counted accurately by placing the objects in groups of 10s.
Second graders have been working very hard on strategies for solving story problems. Students are encouraged to use what they know about numbers, use place value strategies, to represent numbers in tens and ones, count on or count back, but not to count all. In the coming weeks second graders will be focusing on odd and even numbers, skip counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, and learning a new game that involves counting mixed coins.
First graders continue to work with me and second graders continue to work with Mrs. Byers.
