In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb!

Second Graders are back to work after a nice long mid winter break! I'm back in the groove after a snow day and several sick days!

We are beginning quite a few new units!

Writing

In Writing we are learning how to write Persuasive Pieces.  Last week second graders looked at several types of persuasive writing samples such as letters, posters, brochures and signs.  This week we started to identify things that are important to us that we would want to help change someone's idea about as well as looking around and noticing problems and things we would want to change.  Second graders should be using their Teeny Tiny Topic Notebooks to jot more ideas in.
We will be exploring the format of persuasive writing and writing lots of persuasive pieces!
Don't be surprised if your child starts trying to persuade you more!

Reading

In Reading we are beginning a new unit called Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power. We are  back to reading Fiction books.  We are reviewing and learning how to make our reading Fluent.  

For one of the lessons, we practiced using dialogue tags to help us read dialogue in different ways.  Ask your child to read the sentence below using the different dialogue tags.

We are also exploring Character Traits.  We read the story,  Molly the Brave and Me.   Ask your child what they learned about Molly and Beth and how they changed from the beginning of the story to the end.

Math

This week we finished up Unit 6 and have moved on to another number and operations unit, Unit 8.  In this unit we will further develop efficient strategies for adding and subtracting numbers across the decades, including the hundreds.  Please read the parent letter that was went home Monday for more information.

Social Studies

Small World Unit

For Social Studies we are learning about Culture.  The essential questions for this unit are:
+How is culture different and the same around the world?
+Why is understanding different cultures important?
+How does your life/culture compare/contrast with other cultures?
+Geography/Map Skills - What are the major land and water features on the globe? +How do we use digital tools to effectively communicate and share ideas or information with others?

Special Treats

On Friday, March 23, our class walked to BRMS to watch the middle school drama club perform Alice in Wonderland! What a wonderful performance by the middle schoolers!

Our class also learned about Fire Safety when the UJFD came to UID.
