February Fun

Science
For our Light unit, we used Groundhog Day to learn about shadows.

We also learned how light travels. We shined a flashlight and sprinkled powder through the beam of light. We learned that light travels in a straight line.  We also lit a candle and noticed that light travels in all directions.

Six more weeks of winter :-(
We also used light boxes to explore what happens when light shines on different materials such as plastic wrap, paper, cardboard, and wax paper.

Reading
We finished up our reading unit, reading non-fiction books with a celebration. Second graders chose several books about one subject. They then made posters to show what they had learned from reading. We visited kindergarten to share our posters and teach what we had learned across books.

Sharing with and teaching others

Spelling
Second Graders are practicing adding -s or -es to base words. We also learned the vowel patterns for long a word (ai, ay, a-consonant-e, eigh).
Ask your child how they know whether or not to add -s or -es and how it changes a base word.
